Begun as an agricultural trading center for the tri-state area called Ark-La-Tex, as well as a favorite of riverboat gamblers, Shreveport also supported a lumber industry as the population increased. The railroads in the late 1800s, and the oil boom in the early 1900s, further expanded the area’s population and construction, and to this day, the Shreveport-Bossier City area still is one of the fastest growing in Louisiana.
